Dog Friendly

Dog-friendly Kirkwall: Welcoming you and your four-legged friends!

At Kirkwall BID, we believe that a vibrant and welcoming town includes everyone- especially our four-legged friends! Whether you're a local dog owner or visiting with your pup, Kirkwall has plenty to offer for a tail-wagging experience.

What does 'Dog-Friendly' Mean?

Being dog friendly means businesses and public spaces are making it easier for you to explore with your canine companion. From Pet-welcoming shops and cafés to scenic walking routes, Kirkwall has the perfect place for you and your dog to enjoy together.

Shops and Businesses - Several shops allow dogs inside, so you can browse without leaving your pup outside.

Look out for the Dog-Friendly Premises window stickers, letting you know dogs are welcome. Keep and eye out and support these local spots.

We stock lovely gifts for dog lovers, like these stunning Boston Terrier salt and pepper shakers by Hannah Tuner

Orkney Souvenirs - We sell dog coats, lead and collar sets in red or green tartan as well as dog bowls in red tartan. We also stock some beautiful Harris Tweed dog lead and collar sets. Further to that I also have cat collars and bowls in red tartan.

The Orcadian Bookshop - Yes, we are dog friendly. We have a dog water bowl, and we alway have treats behind the counter.

The Orkney Distillery - At the Orkney Distillery we do our best to accommodate everyone, which includes allowing anyone to bring their dogs into the front bar and our beer garden oot the back. We will always provide water and treats to any fluffy visitors along with our staff being happy to watch any dogs if their owners are on a tour.

Beggs Shoes - We are happy to welcome dogs, large or small, to our store as long as they remain on a lead at all times. There are however a few things we ask our customers to consider when visiting with a dog.

Here are a few things to think about before taking your dog shopping:

  • Be aware that not all customers may feel comfortable with dogs walking about, even if you know that they will do no harm. Alternatively, make sure that your dog feels comfortable around people too. Our stores can get very busy, especially around sale time, so keep this in mind.
  • Shoes are our thing and there is a well- known fact that some dogs like to chew shoes. If your dog is one of those perhaps keep them close to you – we don’t want any pooch getting a new pair for free!
  • If you have a small dog it might be a good idea to hold them as you wander about to avoid any little paws being stepped on.
